A Review of EVERYDAY POETRY by Jennifer Morrissette

Poetry is a personal medium, revealing much about the poet. In her inaugural collection, Everyday Poetry, aptly subtitled, Looking on the Bright Side of Life, Jennifer Morrissette welcomes you into her life.

The poems vary in subject and style, and I enjoyed being introduced to forms which I am less familiar with, such as the cinquain, limerick, and what she refers to as "Original Poems in the Mersterian Style."

She uses a variation also in the weight of the subjects of her poetry, so some are very entertaining while others induce a sense of worship. One example of the first is "O Happy Day!" and of the second, "Clothed in Immortality."

In the introduction on the back cover, this book is called "a short anthology of encouragement." It is, and I hope Morrissette produces subsequent volumes.

This can be ordered through Amazon.com.

My own book manuscripts

I wrote two devotional books when we lived in CA: Slices of Bread: Daily Grace for Women and Daily Grace in the Hands of my Sovereign Father.
I've worked on more since we moved to KY: Still More Slices of Bread, Various Studies in Various Scripture Passages, and Journey Mercies--my memoir.
Interested in any of these? Provide me with an e-mail address.

Making Plans for 2014

If the Lord wills, not only do I have my blog posts planned for the rest of 2013, but also for 2014, for my main blog, www.tuesdayssliceofbread.blogspot.com
Next year, I plan to study and to write about the prayers of the apostle Paul. Just thinking about that excites me.

The Joy of Helping

I had the joy of sending help to others who asked for it. Time will tell if it is as useful as I found it to be. And I am thinking about writing a fourth devotional book once the dust settles here. Maybe. Perhaps.

Books

Books
Supposedly my parents could hardly wait until I could read for myself. I don't know about that as it is so long now since I acquired that skill.
I also allegedly badgered  my Mom for the latest Little Golden Book when those were available at our grocery store, and of course selected comic books--all of which have found their way to the hands of others.
I have enjoyed acquiring books of various kinds over the years, but the time came to start letting go last year.
Now I have the pleasure of considering new homes for my old friends--a painful process but a necessary one.
I am taking a break from that to write this short post.

Some Quotes on Language and Writing

Some Quotes on Language and Writing

Mark Hopkins said, "Language is the picture and counterpart of thought."
Claude Levi-Strauss observed, "Language is a form of human reason and has its reasons which are unknown to man."
Ludwig Wittgenstein commented, "The limits of my language means the limits of my world."
Mark Twain noted, "The difference between the right word and the nearly right word is the same as that between lightning and the lightning bug."
Sheridan Baker proposed, "Grammar gives you command of language; logic, command of thought; rhetoric command of men."
William Faulkner claimed, "A writer needs three things, experience, observation and imagination, any two of which, at times any one of which, can supply the lack of the others."
William Zinsser emphasized, "Writing well means believing in your writing and believing in yourself, taking risks, daring to be different, pushing yourself to excel.  You will write only as well as you make yourself write."
